The HIGH VOLTAGE INSULATION HiTESTER 3455 is made for measuring insulation resistance in high-voltage facilities.
The instrument’s poweful features include the ability to change the settings in fine steps over a wide range of voltages, and an assortment of other functions necessary for a variety of diagnostic requirements. 1. What’s so special about the 3455?
Up until now, insulation resistance measurement by HIOKI testers has been limited to a maximum applied voltage of 1,000 V, which is insufficient for inspecting high-voltage electrical facilities. Management of the major electrical power facilities is of critical importance in all parts of the world. The HIGH VOLTAGE INSULATION HiTESTER 3455 was designed with such management requirements in mind.

2. Where can I use the 3455?
This extremely flexible instrument can be used in locations with power receiving units and high-voltage electrical facilities to measure high-voltage equipment such as large motors, transformers, and power cables. The device can also be applied in inspection and maintenance work in a variety of locations including power rooms, elevator utility stations, factories, and other facilities. Voltage measurement can be set to as low as 250 V, allowing for a wide range of uses, and the large LCD features a backlight for easy viewing in dark areas.

3. What is the purpose of the temperature compensation function?
Temperature Sensor 9631-01 Insulation resistance changes with temperature, and how it changes depends on the materials used. On the 3455, ambient temperature can be measured and stored directly with the temperature sensor (sold separately), and insulation resistance can then be converted to what it would be at the standard temperature (20°C at default settings). Remember - insulation resistance cannot be measured directly while equipment is running, but the resistance during operation (at high temperature) can be estimated from a measurement done while the equipment is offline (at low temperatures). With the conversion varying based on the materials used, a set of 10 different cables are provided to assist you in conveniently make up for temperature differences.

4. I need a unit that I can carry to the field. Can the 3455 do the job?
The high-performance 3455 fits nicely into a compact hard case. Packed with the cables, temperature sensor, and USB cable, the set still only weighs in at 2.8 kg (6.2 lbs), making it ultra-portable for any technician.

5. My company is very strict on safety issues. How does the 3455 stand up against competitors?

The specially designed shutter mechanism also prevents simultaneous use of measurement terminals and other terminals - thereby physically inhibiting the dangerous use of AC power during insulation testing.

6. How much data can I store on the device?
The 3455 provides a manual storage function for 100 data sets, and a logging function for a maximum of 10 log files consisting of as many as 360 data sets each.

7. What PC applications do you offer so that I can manage measurement data back at the office?
Data that you have stored on the 3455 at the test site can be taken back to the office and easily transferred to a PC using the provided USB cable. A free application software that enables the data download and powerful PC processing functions including report creation, printing, data analysis, and more, can be obtained from this website. The software is also bundled with any purchase of the 3455.

8. What do PI and DAR stand for?
PI is short for Polarization Index and DAR stands for Dielectric Absorption Ratio, both of which are standard indices used to evaluate insulation quality. A diagnostic check of the insulation condition can be made based on the level of decrease in leakage current once a fixed period of time has passed after voltage has been applied. For example, PI 10/1 min is the resistance value 10 minutes after voltage application, divided by the value after 1 minute. A resulting value closer to 1 (indicating little change) indicates insulation deterioration. Similarly, DAR is the ratio of the insulation resistance at 60 seconds to the insulation resistance at 30 seconds (DAR 1min/30s), or to 15 seconds (DAR 1min/15S).

9. What is step voltage testing?
In this type of test, the voltage is gradually increased during which time changes in insulation resistance and leakage current are measured. Two different step settings are provided in the 3455: 500 V to 2.5 kV in 500 V increments, and 1 kV to 5 kV in 1 kV increments. You can also select from steps of 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, and 5 minutes. The data from each step is stored for later viewing, and any changes in insulation resistance or leakage current in relation to the voltage increases should be cause for concern.

10. How many ways can I power the 3455?
The 3455 can be loaded with the optional rechargeable battery pack (sold separately) and 6 dry cell batteries (LR6) at the same time. This will provide you with up to 14 hours of continuous measurements by simply switching the power source when either power supply is depleted. Use the optional AC adapter to recharge the battery pack, measure temperature and conduct other non-insulation testing functions such as uploading measurement data to your PC.
